Spotlight: Leuchtturm1917

When we expanded The Paper Mouse in late 2018, one of our top priorities was to make room for more notebooks in different sizes, shapes, and rulings. And after growing our shop, adding more tables, and building some extra bookshelves, in 2020 we finally had space to bring in a brand we’d had our eye on for a while: Leuchtturm1917. Available in a rainbow of colors that caught our eye when we first came across them, these German-made notebooks look simple from the outside, but inside they’re filled with thoughtful details that make them a consistently popular choice.

Established in 1917, Leuchtturm (which means “lighthouse” in German) believes that “details make all the difference,” and their well-designed notebooks reflect that idea. Some of those details include numbered pages and a table of contents to help you organize what you write, bookmarks to help you keep your place, spine and cover labels so you can archive your notebooks by topic or date, and high quality archival paper that’s thick and fountain pen friendly. The notebooks open flat so they’re easy to write in. All around, they’re comfortable to use and thoughtfully designed to help you “think with the hand.”

Given their talent for designing helpful organizational tools, it’s no surprise that Leuchtturm1917 is the maker of the original Bullet Journal, developed in partnership with Bullet Journal creator Ryder Carroll. And in addition to their popular notebooks, Leuchtturm1917 also makes planners, sketchbooks, and pens. We’ve recently picked up their Drehgriffel pen, a very smooth-writing gel pen with fun vintage vibes and an ultra-satisfying twist mechanism.

Leuchtturm’s products don’t have a lot of bells and whistles - they’re just classic, well-designed, highly functional tools, proof that the simplest things sometimes give us the most enjoyment. We love the playful array of colors they come in and the care they put into making their stationery, and they’ve been one of our most popular notebook lines since their arrival in early 2020.

Personalize your Leuchtturm notebook

When we first met Leuchtturm, we were drawn to their trade show booth by the cool foil-stamping machine that they use to personalize their notebooks. Now we’re excited to announce that Leuchtturm is bringing their stamping machine to us! Join us at The Paper Mouse on Saturday, December 4 to get your name printed on your notebook, or order online to have it shipped to you. A personalized notebook or planner makes a great holiday gift!
